Dr Harry Oranezi

Honourable Dr. Harry Nnabueze Oranezi was a distinguished Nigerian physician, public health strategist, statesman, and community leader whose life embodied service, compassion, and transformational leadership.

He was born on January 18, 1967, in Aba, Abia State, to the family of Late Cyril Nwakeme Oranezi and Mrs. Christiana Amanuli Oranezi (née Ndianefo), both of Ebenator in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State. He was the youngest of ten sons, raised in an environment grounded in discipline, resilience, and strong family values that shaped his lifelong commitment to service and humanity.

CHILDHOOD

Dr. Oranezi began his educational journey at Railway Halt Primary School, Aba, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate with distinction. He proceeded to National High School, Aba, where he distinguished himself academically and socially. A gifted sportsman, he earned the nickname “Amando Maradona” for his exceptional football skills and was also an accomplished table tennis player. He later attended the Federal School of Arts and Science (FESAS), Ogoja, where he completed his Advanced Level studies between 1986 and 1987.

Driven by a deep belief that education is a catalyst for societal transformation, he studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ilorin, graduating with an M.B.B.S. degree in 1995. During his university years, he was fondly known as “Wisdom Harry” or “Wisharry,” reflecting both his intellectual depth and leadership qualities. His involvement in student union activities revealed an early passion for advocacy and bridge-building between leadership and the people.

EDUCATION

Following graduation, he completed his housemanship at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital and undertook his National Youth Service in Oyo State in December 1996. He later returned to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital to commence residency training in Paediatrics, inspired by his deep compassion for children and his desire to improve healthcare outcomes.

In 2003, Dr. Oranezi transitioned from clinical medicine into public service, bringing his healthcare experience into national policymaking. He was elected to the House of Representatives representing Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo Federal Constituency under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). As one of the youngest legislators of his time, he distinguished himself through active legislative engagement and served as Deputy Chairman of the prestigious House Committee on Health, contributing meaningfully to national health policy development and legislative oversight.

After his tenure in the National Assembly, Dr. Oranezi further strengthened his expertise in health systems and policy by obtaining a Master of Science degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Health Policy, Planning and Financing from the London School of Economics and Political Science and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom. His academic pursuit deepened his lifelong commitment to strengthening health systems and promoting equitable access to quality healthcare.

Upon his return to Nigeria in 2007, he joined the economic team of Late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, working closely with the Office of the Chief Economic Adviser to the President in supporting manpower development initiatives and contributing to national health policy formulation. His dedication to public service continued over the years, including his role as Director-General of the Atiku-Obi Campaign Organization in 2019.

Beyond professional accomplishments and public office, Dr. Harry Oranezi was widely known for his generous spirit and deep devotion to people. Fondly called Ifèmba, a name symbolizing strength and dependable leadership, he believed that true success was measured by the number of lives uplifted. He valued friendship deeply and maintained strong personal relationships across communities and generations. He consistently used his position and influence to support others, quietly opening doors, offering guidance, and standing in the gap for many.

His life reflected uncommon selflessness. He often placed the wellbeing of family, loved ones, and community ahead of personal comfort, demonstrating sacrifice through action rather than words. He invested deeply in people, strengthened family bonds, encouraged education, and contributed meaningfully to the growth and progress of his hometown and beyond. His generosity of heart transcended boundaries and left a lasting imprint on many lives.

Above all, Dr. Harry Oranezi was a devoted husband and loving father whose home reflected warmth, partnership, and deep affection. He cherished his family profoundly and demonstrated through daily actions the values of love, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mrs. Chinyere Oranezi, affectionately known to him as Akwaugo, their three children, the extended Oranezi family, and countless friends, colleagues, and beneficiaries whose lives were touched by his kindness, generosity, and leadership.

Dr. Harry Nnabueze Oranezi passed on January 24, 2026, shortly after celebrating his 59th birthday. His life remains a powerful testament to purposeful leadership — a rare blend of medical excellence, intellectual depth, public service, and enduring humanity.
